BURBANK – A sixth-grade student at John Muir Middle School collapsed during a run with his gym class Thursday morning and later died at a hospital, apparently of heart trouble, officials said. Austin Cook, 11, was taking a morning run with his gym class when he fell, said Joel Shapiro, deputy superintendent with the Burbank Unified School District. The boy was taken to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, where he later died. “It’s a tragedy for anyone, and it’s particularly a tragedy at a school community when someone of this age passes away,” Shapiro said. “And our deepest condolences are with the family.” Austin was initially conscious and complaining of chest pain, Shapiro said. The boy underwent surgery at the hospital before being pronounced dead about 2 p.m., Shapiro said. Austin did not complain of any pain before collapsing, and John Muir Middle School had nothing in the student’s health record showing that he had any problem with his heart, Shapiro said.
