Southeastern’s Athletic Director Jay Artigues will accept the recognition tonight at the Southland Conference Honors Dinner at the Westin Stonebriar in Frisco.”We’re extremely proud to receive the Southland Strong Community Service Award,” said Artigues. “Our department’s mission statement outlines expectations of excellence in the classroom, in the community and in competition. With 23 community service hours per student-athlete, our coaches and student-athletes are dedicating themselves to living that mission statement. We’re fortunate to be a part of a special community here in Hammond and our Lions and Lady Lions have shown their dedication and understanding of how important it is to give back.”The Southland Strong Community Service Award is given to the member institution that is most active in the community through student-athletes’ individual service hours, institution’s organized community service events and participation in Southland league-wide activities, including a campus initiative selected by each institution and the Southland Gives Back community service project during winter break. In total, Southland Conference student-athletes worked more than 38,000 hours — bettering the 30,000 hours completed in 2017-18. Each participating school performed more than 1,000 hours in 2018-19.
JOCKEY QUOTESVICTOR ESPINOZA, MIDCOURT, WINNER: “He’s getting so good right now, he’s taking everything on his own and he does things so easily. Horses, when they get into that rhythm, it’s kind of hard to get beat. John Shirreffs has done an amazing job with this horse. He is not very easy to deal with in morning, but John is an expert with those kinds of horses.”TRAINER QUOTESJOHN SHIRREFFS, MIDCOURT, WINNER: “In the afternoon, he shows up. We think the further he goes, the better he’ll get. When this horse applies himself, he’s a really good horse. We’ll probably run next in the Native Diver at Del Mar (Grade III, 1 1/18 miles on Nov. 23).” NOTES: The winning owner is C R K Stable LLC.
JOCKEY QUOTESDRAYDEN VAN DYKE, AUTHENTIC, WINNER: “Beautiful trip. He took a little tiny stumble out of the gate, but it wasn’t enough to cost us. I was just in cruise control. I was seeing if anybody was going to test me to make me pick it up.“I kept him going a few times, just to keep him focused, but he got off amazing and it seems like there’s more in the tank.“I think he’s just getting more mature himself; that was his first time going two turns.”MIKE SMITH, HONOR A.P., SECOND: “I’m very proud of him, and I thought he ran extremely well. We were a bit behind coming in because he bruised his foot earlier, about a month and a half or two months ago. So, we missed some time with him, but I thought if I could finish within a couple lengths of whoever won it today, then that would be a really good effort, and if I was to win it, that would be incredible. I was very happy with this effort, and he should move forward off this. He should have a better kick next time, so we’re excited.(On his maturity and progress toward the Kentucky Derby): “He’s an intelligent horse. Early on, I think a lot of it was that he’s just a big old colt and likes to play a lot and wants to rear up and do all that, but he’s starting to mature a whole lot and listening to what we’re trying to get him to do. So far, so good. He’s just getting smarter every race.”TRAINER QUOTESBOB BAFFERT, AUTHENTIC, WINNER, AND THOUSAND WORDS, THIRD: “He stumbled a little bit leaving there, and I anticipated that, but he’s so quick on his feet. Once he got him around the turn–I know they were going quick and I knew Thousand Words was closer, and I probably learned a lot from him; he doesn’t want to be that close. He sort of flattened out at the end. I was disappointed with him.“But when I saw the fractions, 22 and change, it was fast, but he was doing it so easy. The really good ones do that and I just love the way he looked down the backside. Turning for home I saw Mike Smith coming with that good horse (Honor A.P.) and I said, ‘We’ll see what he’s made of’ and I was hoping he wouldn’t do his shenanigans (ducking in).“But he handled it well and he wasn’t tired. He’s a special horse and this was probably one of the toughest prep races that we’ve seen so far. Those were really good horses in there. We hope to stay healthy and run in the Santa Anita Derby (April 4). He’ll stay here and run in that and I’ll figure something out with Thousand Words.“Drayden (Van Dyke) has been doing a magnificent job on him and I’m happy for him. I’m happy for the groom; a lot of sweat and hard work goes into these things and we are fortunate to find a horse like this.”On wearing earplugs: “I don’t want to give my secret away. That’s what calmed American Pharoah down. He was the same way; some horses are just really delicate to sound so we put em’ in it and it seemed like it worked. I don’t like to compare my horses; one race at a time. We still have a long way to go, but what I saw today, t you want to see him doing it as easy as he did. He looked like he was enjoying himself out there. I have to just keep him at this level until the first Saturday in May.”JOHN SHIRREFFS, HONOR A.P., SECOND: “He ran really great. I’m very happy with him.”JACK WOLF, AUTHENTIC, PART-OWNER WINNER: “On top of the way he tucked in in the last race, Bob seems to have it solved. I was sitting next to Bob during the race and when I saw the .22 and .44, I thought they were too quick, and he said he’s doing it easy.”NOTES: This Was Baffert’s seventh San Felipe win, adding to his record of six previously.

We decided he needs to be taken off the pace and it’s best for him.“Today, I was one hundred percent sure there was enough speed in the race, so Jeff said, ‘Okay, take him back.’ We were able to save ground and coming around the last turn, a gap was open, so why go around?”Off as the second choice at 3-1, Hariboux paid $8.20, $3.60 and $3.20.Owned by Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal, LLC, Hariboux, notched his first stakes win and second victory for Mullins in his fifth stateside start. Sailing and football seven-a-side were excluded from the programme when the 22 sports were unveiled in January, with badminton and taekwondo set to make their Paralympic debuts at the Games having been added. The Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association (CPISRA), who following the decision had demanded an explanation for football seven-a-side’s omission, had proposed for the IPC Governing Board to consider adding a 23rd sport at the Games. After a debate, the General Assembly rejected the motion to all but end the faint hopes of sailing and football seven-a-side to be reinstated, with both sports having missed out of selection initially having been deemed to have failed to fulfil the IPC Handbook’s minimum criteria for worldwide reach. Both the International Sailing Federation and International Federation of CP Football, however, were accepted as IPC members at the General Assembly, along with the World Taekwondo Federation and Badminton World Federation. The National Paralympic Committees of Albania, Bangladesh, Somalia and Peru all saw their membership terminated by the IPC, who claimed the decisions were as a result of the NPC’s inactivity or due to having a suspension which exceeds more than four consecutive years. A new Somalia NPC saw their membership approved by the IPC along with St Vincent and the Grenadines, Aruba, Yemen and Guinea Bissau.IPC President Sir Philip Craven presented the body’s biennial report to the General Assembly attended by nearly 300 people, highlighting the growth and breadth of the Paralympic Movement’s work over the past two years.Sir Philip urged the Movement to build upon the success of previous Paralympic Games, using the IPC’s 2015-2018 Strategic Plan as a guide to further improve the Games, athlete development and awareness of the Paralympic brand.“I would like to thank the IPC membership, IPC management team and all volunteers for playing their role in the making the Paralympic Movement the strongest it has ever been,” he said.“The priority now is to use the new IPC Strategic Plan to build on these foundations. “Together, we must deliver a hugely successful Paralympic Games in Rio next year and show to the world that Beijing 2008 and London 2012 were not exceptions, but the norm.“We must also continue to engage more people around the world in the Paralympic Movement, either as participants in Para-sport, TV viewers at home or spectators in venues.” Several key motions were approved by the IPC membership throughout the day, including the 2015 IPC Athlete Classification Code, which is due to come into force from January 1, 2017.The Code has been designed to be more athlete focused and accessible, with 2,700 comments having been received in three rounds of consultation with stakeholders during its development, which began in June 2013.
The event was organised at the last minute on Sunday night after swell forecasters anticipated huge, rideable waves at Cape Solander, on the southern side of Sydney’s Botany Bay.Sixteen surfers were invited to take part in the event which featured waves of more than six metres breaking closing to rocks. Two hour-long heats, featuring four surfers in each, were held before conditions became too dangerous to continue on the dropping tide.Few clean waves were ridden with several of the competitors suffering heavy wipeouts. Renowned big-wave rider Justen Allport, from the New South Wales Central Coast, suffered a gash to the head and an injured neck while the rest of the field miraculously escaped unscathed.Allport was taken to hospital for further assessment.Former world tour surfer Blake Thornton managed a clean ride as well as suffering a few wipeouts.”I think everyone in the event would agree this is the biggest the Cape has ever been surfed,” Thornton said.”Even though I got absolutely smashed, at the end of the battle it’s going to be a surf I remember for a long time, with one great wave and one of the worst wipeouts I’ve ever had.”Allport is leading the event from Russell Bierke and Evan Faulks.Surfing commentator and former world champion Mark Occhilupo, who grew up in the Botany Bay area, said the waves ridden on Monday were the most dangerous to have been surfed at the spot also known as “Ours”.With two heats still to be contested, Cape Fear event organisers are hopeful of completing the contest on Tuesday. The event is closed to spectators due to safety concerns.
In fact, Reinier’s initial idea was to make the leap to Europe through a second-row club in the elite of the continent, with Dortmund, Ajax or Everton very well positioned. Finally, the emergence of Madrid, the team he has been following since he was a child, and the attractive project he presented to him, was able to do everything. The new budding crack in Brazil will also end at the Bernabéu. For this, the visit of Reinier’s father and agent last year to the white facilities, which they were delighted with, was key for its high quality and for the treatment of José Ángel Sánchez, general director of Madrid. Also because of the proximity of Juni Calafat, head of international football of the Bernabéu, without whose action, especially in Brazil, the current policy of signings of Florentino Pérez.First, the Pre-Olympic; later, CastillaAfter competing with the U-23 of his country the Pre-Olympic of Colombia, which began on Saturday, January 18 and that in the best case would extend until February 9, Reinier will join Castilla. It is the roadmap that Madrid presented to the boy and his surroundings, which they saw with very good eyes that the boy finishes being made under the orders of Raul and has the opportunity to get to know Zidane and his future companions when the option of uploading to train with the first template emerges. 19 The speed of Real Madrid will give him a double prize. First because it will save the 5 (€ 35M) or the 40 (€ 70M) million raised by the Reinier clause in summer and in January 2021, respectively. And second, because it has served him to get ahead of fierce competition, with Liverpool, City, Arsenal or PSG very interested in the last pearl of Flamengo. Atlético closes its official stores in the Community of Madrid from today, March 13, until Tuesday 31 of March as a consequence of the health emergency crisis caused by the Codvid-19 crisis. The only one that will remain open in this period is online. In total, Atlético has seven physical stores in Madrid, those located in the Wanda Metropolitano, Ciudad Deportiva Wanda, Gran Vía, Centro Deportivo Wanda Alcalá de Henares, Tres Aguas, Gran Plaza 2 and Madrid Río. All these are the ones that throw the trap, following the indications set by the Government and the health authorities. The tour in the stadium will also be closed until that date. The rojiblanco club yesterday afternoon already announced temporary measures in relation to the rojiblanca squad because of the coronavirus. At the moment the training sessions are suspended only until Monday, the day when, in principle, the footballers are called to train at Cerro del Espino. About Higuaín, who is experiencing a moment of concern both about the health situation in Italy in the face of the COVID-19 emergency and about his mother’s illness, there are no certainties and nothing excludes anything. Failure to return to Italy could lead to two paths: seeking an agreement to terminate (The tip has several offers, including that of his River Plate) or come to a confrontation with the club, who would refuse to pay him all the remaining wages, around 10 million net. In the coming days Maurizio Sarri could intervene, with whom the player has a special relationship (they have already worked together in Naples and London): the coach is most interested in settling the matter as soon as possible, especially if in the end it will be possible to recover the postponed matches.Juve is looking for a new center forward, but would have it at their disposal for the next course and, in this, the only one they can count on is Pipita. The former Madrid player, alternating with Dybala, was having a positive performance, playing more for the team (as his eight assists demonstrate) and also scoring a goal (he has eight). Giving up his talent in the final stretch of the season is an outcome that the mister wants to avoid at all costs, since it would force him to always play with the ‘Joya’ and Cristiano, or to make one of his wingers point (Douglas Costa, Juan Cudrado and Federico Bernardeschi). The one that has just started may be the decisive week: if the Italian Government will give the ok to the training sessions, which would finally have a date, the call for all the bianconeri abroad will arrive. And Higuaín will have to give his answer.A month in ArgentinaGonzalo Higuaín left Italy when the players and several Juventus employees were in quarantine after the positive by Covid-19 of Rugani and Matuidi. The Argentine was intercepted by the police but had a certificate of having given ‘negative’ and they allowed him to leave on a private plane that could not fly directly to Argentina and had to stop in France and Spain.Juventus authorized the trip and now, It is awaiting a possible return in which there is nothing clear. The striker is pondering his decision and the club has no answer to know if he will return or not when they call up the players. who are abroad to return to training. Given this situation, Tuttosport proposes three future scenarios for the top: returning to Italy and ending the season, not returning with permission from Juventus or without permission, staying in Argentina and that the Turin club ends up terminating his contract for breach of it. Italian football does not yet have a date to return to training and, while clubs and institutions discuss how (and if) to return to work, several Calcio players remain abroad. One of them is Gonzalo Higuain, whose case has been causing controversy in Italy for days. The situation of the Argentine is complicated: he only has one year left on his contract and Juventus has been looking for his heir for months. The names that shuffle are various, although the ones that sound the most are those of Mauro Icardi and Arkadiusz Milik. The first is an old goal of sports director Fabio Paratici and he yearns to return to the transalpine country after his time at PSG. Parisians should spend 70 million to exercise the purchase option from Inter, which would rise to 85 if in the end the Argentine ends up being transferred to an Italian club. The Pole, for his part, does not find an agreement to renew with Naples and Maurizio Sarri would be delighted to return to work with him, although his agent has not closed the doors to a new negotiation with the Azzurri to prolong it.The attitude of Juventus, who already seems to consider Pipita out of his plans, would be, according to the Italian press, one of the reasons that has led him to consider staying in Argentina also when the go-ahead comes to return to training.
